The Siege of Lisbon

69  Tiberius Julius Alexander orders his Roman legions in Alexandria to swear allegiance to Vespasian as Emperor.

552  At the Battle of Taginae, Byzantine forces under Narses defeat the Ostrogoths and King Totila is mortally wounded.

1097  At the Battle of Dorylaeum, Crusaders led by prince Bohemond of Taranto defeat a Seljuk army led by sultan Kilij Arslan I.

1147  Portuguese-Crusader forces begin the Siege of Lisbon to recapture the city during the Second Crusade.

The Battle of La Higueruela

1431  The Battle of La Higueruela takes place in Granada, leading to a modest advance of Castilian during the Reconquista.

1482  The Moors defeat the Castillians and Aragonese at the Battle of Loja.

1520  The Spanish fight their way clear of Tenochtitlan during  La Noche Triste but lose many lives and much of the Aztec treasure.

1569  In the Union of Lublin, the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania confirm a real union, and the united country is called the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth or the Republic of Both Nations.

1656  The Poles and Lithuanians take back the city from the Swedish as the Siege of Warsaw ends.

The Battle of the Boyne

1690  The Battle of the Boyne was fought between two rival claimants of the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones, the Catholic King James and the Protestant King William.

1690  The Battle of Fleurus was a major engagement of the Nine Years' War. In a bold envelopment the Duc de Luxembourg, commanding Louis XIV’s army of some 35,000 men, soundly defeat Prince Waldeck’s Allied Imperialists force of approximately 38,000 men comprising mainly Dutch, German, and Spanish troops.

1782  American privateers attack Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in the Raid on Lunenburg (1782) during the American Revolutionary War.

1862  The Battle of Tampa ends with the withdrawal of the USS Sagamore.

The Battle of Gettysburg

 1862  During the American Civil War at the Battle of Malvern Hill,  The Union wins the final battle in the Seven Days Campaign.

1863  The fateful three day Battle of Gettysburg begins. Arguably the turning point of the American Civil War, Union Major General George Gordon Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee's invasion of the North.

1864  The Prussian victory at the Battle of Als ends the Second Schleswig War.

1898  A the Battle of El Caney  American-Cuban forces succeed in capturing the town, fort and blockhouses and protect the right flank of the main American attack on the Heights of San Juan to the south.during the Spanish-American War.

The Battle of San Juan Hill

1898  During the Spanish–American War, American and Cuban forces win a decisive victory at the Battle of San Juan Hill.

1911  Germany dispatches the gunship SMS Panther to Morocco, elevating the Agadir Crisis.

1913  Serbia and Greece declare war on Bulgaria starting the Second Balkan War.

1915  Leutnant Kurt Wintgens of the then-named German Fliegertruppe air service achieves the first known aerial victory with a synchronized machine-gun armed fighter plane, the Fokker M.5K/MG Eindecker.

1916  During WWI the Battle of the Somme begins. The British military suffers its greatest number of casualties in a single day (60,000).

The Battle of the Somme

1917  The Czechoslovak Legions win a local victory at the Battle of Zborov as part of the unsuccessful Kerensky Offensive during WWI.

1941  During World War II, armored forces of German Panzer Group 4 of Army Group North cross the Dvina river and capture Riga, the Latvian capital.

1942  During WWII at the First Battle of El Alamein, German Field Marshal Rommel captures 2,000 prisoners from the El Alamein "box" but loses 18 of his 55 remaining tanks.

1943  Allies capture Viru, New Guinea during WWII.

1944  Allies take Cecina and Pomerance, Italy during WWII.

1944  Since D-Day, the Allies have landed 920,000 troops, 177,000 vehicles and 600,000 tons of supplies and equipment. In the 24 days of fighting, they have lost 62,000 men killed, wounded and missing.

The Battle of Balikpapan

1945  The Battle of Balikpapan begins as Allied forces land on the island of Borneo during WWII.
