Friday Fun - Give a Hoot!!

Nope.

Wargamers love to do things PROPERLY, so if you want to cut loose this weekend and hoot and holler with the rest of 'em, then you better take a moment and learn from the best of 'em.  How exactly does one learn how to hoot and holler properly?  Look no farther than this charming video of old American Civil War Vets giving it one last go at the "Rebel Yell," and you'll be well on your way!

Enjoy and have a great weekend!  :-)

  2. Awesome footage! I'd always wondered what the Rebel Yell sounded like - basically a whooping howl (now that's descriptive ain't it ;) ). Those warriors were sure tough characters even in old age. God Bless them!

    1. Yeah, I was going to include some boring history stuff from the Wikipedia page (link above). Seems like they tried to imitate Native American cry's or hunting dogs.

As for the video, my favorite part is just watching the interaction between these old farts. :-)

  4. What a gem, I had never considered the fact that there would be film footage of Civil War veterans; I found it charming and chilling in equal measure. As for Billy Idol, that takes me back, a wonderful soundtrack from my youth.

    1. Same here. Just imagine regiments of these guys coming across the battlefield doing that yell!

  5. This is fantastic! It never crossed my mind that the answer to "what does the Rebel Yell sound like?" could be found on youtube. My very first though was the Rebel Yell sounds alot like an Apache yell.

    Love the old vets too!

    1. I was trying to Google "Battle of Yell Sound" and that video came up. A very pleasant surprise!

  6. Julius Caesar wrote that the ancient Celts would rush into battle with"a diverse and horrible shouting".

Given the fact that a great many Southerners were (and are to this day) of Scots-Irish descent, could the war cry we call the Rebel Yell be much older than we have been led to believe?

    1. Yeah Wikipedia page basically says the same thing.

"The origin of the yell is uncertain, though it is thought to have been influenced either by Native American war cries or a Scottish war cry tradition."

I like the comparison to a rabbit scream, and Captain James Dinkens in the video sounds spot on.
